If you're not a Star Wars nerd, then don't even bother reading this review. In it, I will be writing under the premise that the Star Wars novels are something to be taken seriously. They're not, of course (supposed to be taken seriously, that is), but when reading guilty pleasure fare such as the 'Republic Commando' series, it is best to heed the advice of Roger Ebert, who states that when criticizing something, you should judge it based not on what it is about, but how it is about it. Female writers in the science fiction and fantasy field are fairly rare. One's that are any good are even more so. (This is not because women are bad writers it is because of Sturgeon's Law.)

First off it is exceedingly rare that I do not finish a book. Secondly, I am a huge Star Wars fan and am VERY familiar with the story and the expanded universe. Thus, it is with a certain amount of surprise I can say that I was able to read about 170 pages into this book before I just had no more desire to finish it. I was genuinely excited to find out more about the infamous Order 66- what I got is this soap opera. Perhaps my not having read any of the Republic Commando books prior to this caus..more

Fitting climax to the series, but … but the book's climax—while fitting and appropriate—was not well told. Hard to say more without spoiling it, but I was very dissatisfied with how Traviss handled what was perhaps the most important scene of the book--no, her whole Commando series. It simply wasn't well done.

I found this book very entertaining to read and very insightful about the universe and the republic before the order 66 occurred. It also gives a side to the clones about what they think about how their life go after the. The book is very long and with the point of view changing every chapter, the book left me hanging every chapter and it make me want to keep reading. The plot thickened very quickly, with twists and turns everywhere. The characters had good depth and from reading the other books..more

Wow. Now that was a great series, I was genuinely surprised by the ending, but happy about it at the same time. Best thing, it's been left open enough for them to continue the story if there's a call for it.
I hope it continues.
Awesome read.
Thanks to my wonderful wife for getting me the series. She knows me so well. :)

Traviss's Republic Commando novels are excellent, and Order 66 is the culmination of her serialized story. With some discussion among friends recently about Jedi-as-bad-guys, I wanted to go back to the foundation: Traviss makes the case at length, in the demi-canon that was the Extended Universe, that Order 66, for the clone troops to kill all the Jedi, was not only a lawful order but largely a moral one.

This is a Star Wars novel that takes place around the same time as the movie Revenge of the Sith. It's a story about the Mandalorian trainers of the clone troopers and how a couple help organize a desertion mission to help give their clone troopers a real life. If you're a big Star Wars fan, who goes beyond the movies, particularly the first three, like I am, then you'll like this book. It's obviously part of a series itself, but you can read it without having read the others because it fills yo..more
The reason I read Star Wars novels is for escapism. This escape is supposed to place me in a familiar universe but the familiarity is less about the contents of that universe than its feel. It is supposed to be a little cheesy perhaps but always fast, exciting and fun.

Get ready for a ride on the roller coaster of emotions. I balled like a baby. Karen Traviss has the gift of writing her characters so that they resonate with you as if you've met them in real life. You will laugh, grieve, and sympathize with these characters. She has also done an amazing job in expanding and exploring the Mandalorian culture. This series is a true delight to read and is highly recommended for any star wars fan out there. It will certainly change your perspective on the clone war..more
The book had the potential for a good story, yet was ruined with too many plot lines to follow and the characters were too hard to keep track of due to the high number of them. It may have been assumed by the author that you had read every book in the series. Now, despite me being told that it was not necessarily a chronological series it is still necessary to read all of the books to fully understand what is taking place in this one.

I am absolutely astounded by how interesting Karen Traviss makes these books. I like the occasional military book, but these I relish. As there are still many things to resolve, I hope that another one is in the works.
I have mixed feelings about this book.
It's not the first book I've read where the primary focus is on a character, or in this case, a group of characters, that are not primary features or hallmarks of the films. Still, I found it difficult to care about all of the characters and struggled to maintain my interest. I was hoping for more backstory on what Palpatine was doing behind the scenes that ultimately led to this order, but there was very little connection to the better-known portions of th..more

I know you have heard the expression it is not you, it is me.. Well this is definitely the case here. I didn't read the first three book, so I was really missing stuff here on the relationships and characters in the book. I was really just interested in the action and events with Order 66. I was told I could probably read this without reading the other ones and well that was partially true.

Karen Traviss’s four book series based off of the Republic Commando video game came to a close with the publication of her latest Star Wars novel, Order 66. The book is a slightly uneven affair, with a number of story lines coming to a close in a quick, complete fashion. The book is by no means a bad or uninteresting read, but it’s not the best of the four.

What can I say? This is my favourite book in the series since the first one captivated me years ago. Every chapter held my interest. There wasn't a single storyline that I didn't find completely engrossing. I'm just after finishing it and I'm still trying to turn my thoughts and feelings into words, but, if you've read and enjoyed any of the other books in this series then this one is a 100% must-read.
I enjoyed it just as much as the others in this series. While I don't understand why certain things had to go the way they did, I still enjoyed it and hope there's more to come. I really want to see more Ordo and Besany, more Fi & Parja, and what happens with Kad. It's well written and while it doesn't use the chips that we learn about in Rebels, many things make sense.

Another great installment in the Republic Commando series, this one centering around the infamous Jedi-purging Order 66 and how the main characters grapple between their duties as soldiers and their duty to Jedi family members and friends. By far the most tragic book in the series. That ending left me staring at a wall for a while.

Order 66 was nearly a 5 star novel for me. It was dark and did a decent job of filling in gaps of the films and even kind of explained the battle of Coruscant that Revenge of the Sith just kind of threw in our laps. Traviss also, as before, excelled in making the Clones their own characters and actually making them unique individuals. Plus, the story was probably the best of the entire Republic Commando series.

Actually one of the better star wars novels I've read. An extended meditation on the expendability of the soldier and the responsibilities citizens have to a corrupt state. Short on action and long on emotion, which makes this a great outlier in the extended EU.

The Clone Wars rage to their bloody climax. Treachery reigns. Treason takes courage. Commandos, Jedi, and the entire Galactic Republic must face the end of life as they know it . . . and the dreaded dawn of a new empire.
Even as the Clone Wars are about to reach an explosive climax, no one knows whether victory will favor the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) or the Separatists. But no matter who wins, the stakes are highest for elite Special Ops clones like the Republic Commandos in Omega and Delta squads–and the notorious renegade Advance Recon Commando troopers known as Null ARCs. And now even the deadliest weapon may not be powerful enough to defeat the realmenace: the apocalyptic horror to be unleashed when Palpatine utters the chilling words The time has come. Execute Order 66. Translation: The Jedi have tried to stage a coup, and all must be shot on sight.
With their faith in the Republic and their loyalty to their Jedi allies put to the ultimate test, how will the men of Omega and Delta squads react to the most infamous command in galactic history?

Order 66 is genuinely fun to play, which is why it's such a shame that the game's UI is so fundamentally broken. If you can overlook these problems and regard it as a diamond in the rough, you'll be rewarded.
By Avery Score on
In Star Wars: Republic Commando: Order 66, you control Republic insurgents under the thrall of Chancellor Palpatine, who's not so secretly a Sith Lord. 'Enact Order 66' is Palpatine's way of commanding you to kill all the Jedi--a move anticipated by everyone but the Jedi themselves, who were too busy doing nude yoga in their hippie commune to notice that every single clone soldier had gone all Dark Side. Order 66 combines excellent strategic shooting with lackluster presentation and broken menu interaction. The gameplay is so good, you'll curse the fact that the user interface is completely broken on the Sony Ericsson S710.
In Order 66, you command three units at a time. You can select these from a small roster that grows each time you complete a level, and eventually includes Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader himself. Each type of soldier fires in a particular direction with a certain level of power. Choosing your troops wisely is practically half the battle; certain units are almost required to beat each level's end boss.
Your units can travel in three formations: staggered, horizontally linear, and vertically linear. You can also switch the order of the troops in the formation to suit your strategy. One unit, for example, can occasionally activate a shield. In these instances it's a good idea to keep him in front to take damage. Med kits abound, and are the game's only power-ups, aside from very rare missile icons. Picking one of these up lets you call for an air strike, damaging all enemy units onscreen.
Order 66 is compelling because it requires you to strategically engage your enemies. If you just charge in, guns blazing, you'll get majorly messed up. Fights against Jedi are easily the highlights; these Buddhist monks from the futuristic past are only vulnerable under specific circumstances. Most of the time, they'll just deflect your blaster shots, sending them darting right back at you.
Crack all plc hmi passwords. Unfortunately, many players will never get to enjoy all that Order 66 has to offer because they'll likely be put off by the game's numerous UI bugs, which are apparent right from the get-go. The splash screen doesn't display in the right aspect ratio. Because this is the screen on which all expository text appears, the story is illegible--those who haven't seen Episode III will be spared any plot spoilers.
In-game, the pause key doesn't work at all. If you don't like the way a fight is going, you'll have to just wait to die. Trial execution guybrush threepwood tales download pc. There's also no way to quit the game midsession, besides hard-resetting your phone. None of these problems were in evidence on the Motorola V551, but the game was unplayably slow on that handset. Ask yourself: Do you want a busted UI or annoying slowdown?
Order 66's sprites don't represent amazing artistry, but the game does let you face off against dozens of enemies simultaneously. The backgrounds are decent too, and--for the most part--true to the movie settings on which they're based. Strangely enough, though, flaming braziers are all over the place, and can cause you damage.
Sweet laser sounds abound, and thankfully don't cause slowdown on the Sony Ericsson S710. We had just about the opposite experience with the Moto V551, which chugged up with each blaster report.
Order 66 is genuinely fun to play, which is why it's such a shame that the game's UI is so fundamentally broken. If you can overlook these problems and regard it as a diamond in the rough, you'll be rewarded. Palpatine will scare you into submission, too. The dude has huge bags under his eyes--a trait common to all Sith--yet only Samuel L. Jackson suspected sedition, because he's always hankering for a fight. (Haven't you seen his other movies?) In any case, with you at the controls, it's too late for all these Light Side sissies. This is a game worth playing, regardless of its problems.
Editor's note 09/07/05: An updated version of this game has been released that corrects some of the issues mentioned in this review.
